Twenty-three seventh- and eighth-grade students under the direction of Melissa Lupi and Sheila DePaola performed an excerpt from 'Hairspray Junior' for a panel of professional theater directors, choreographers and performers.
“We’ve been working hard since September to arrange and rehearse for a 15-minute performance that will cover the musical 'Hairspray' with songs and dance,” DePaola said. “The students are excited about this play and what it means to them. The musical expresses the importance of inclusion, diversity and how we all get along.”
The Pocantico Hills ensemble will also take part in acting workshops, view performances and listen to panel discussions with Broadway artists and the songwriting team from Disney's "Frozen."
The cast performed sneak previews at the December Board of Education meeting and again on Jan. 12 in front of parents and family members.
“It is such a joy to see our diverse student population working together and representing so well our school and the wonderful community they come from,” Schools Superintendent Valencia Douglas said.
